PURPOSE: This is a workshop that:
- Helps mentors discover how to effectively develop people
- Models effective mentoring strategies
- Shows how to execute creative teaching methods
- Allows for practice of four mentoring skills
- Teaches how to allow for individual differences
OBJECTIVES: Participants in this workshop will:
- Recognize the difference between coaching, mentoring and counseling
- Discover four phases of an effective mentoring process
- Analyze four mentoring skills and apply them to real mentoring situations
- Compare effective and ineffective teaching strategies
- Assess individual differences and choose appropriate mentoring strategies
TAKE AWAYS: Participants will leave the workshop with:
- An action plan for implementing their new mentoring skills and strategies

To meet the stated objectives of the workshop, a two-day format is recommended. During the two days, participants will have the opportunity to learn the key concepts of, and more importantly, practice the key skills and strategies of mentoring. They will leave with a familiarity of key mentoring principles and the confidence that they can be an effective mentor with a certain level of competence.
The mentoring content can be customized to meet each organization?s needs and objectives. Shorter awareness sessions of ? day or 1 day are also available, where participants will be exposed to the key concepts and strategies of effective mentoring.

Mentoring Skills: The CARE Model
- Connect - Discover how to effectively establish rapport with the mentee. Determine goals and objectives for the process, and create a set of guidelines for interaction. Decide on a schedule and meeting plan and process.
- Ask/Listen - Discover how to ask questions effectively. Learn the difference between solution-focused and problem-focused questions. Help the mentee discover his/her own solutions whenever possible. Practice being a good listener by working on the listening skills of attending, paraphrasing and empathizing.
- Relate - Discover how to give feedback effectively in mentoring situations - both positive and educational feedback. Consider the importance of being able to receive feedback as a mentor. Determine ways to give advice and instruction that work for both the mentee and mentor.
- Emphasize - Discover and share resources available to the mentee to help fuel his/her growth. Remind him/her of the importance of keeping good meeting records and a growth journal. Reaffirm your confidence in him/her to achieve growth goals.

- Developmental Differences - Determine the developmental level of your mentee and how to appropriately develop him/her.
- Behavioral Style Differences - Discover your mentee?s behavior style and how to adapt to meet his/her needs.
- Cultural Background/Life Situation Differences - Recognize the areas to be sensitive to regarding the family and cultural background of your mentee, and any special life situations that he/she currently faces.
